CLSA Education Foundation Scholarship Application Instructions

Each applicant must submit a complete application package by the application deadline of December 1st.  The package must include the following:

  1. A completed application form.
  2. Submit a brief, yet complete essay indicating educational objectives, future plans of study, activities related to the profession, any surveying-related work experience, how you have promoted the profession and your financial status and degree of need. Must be typed. Handwritten essays will not be accepted.
  3. Submit at least one letter of recommendation, from the current calendar year, preferably from a faculty member familiar with your work. Should a faculty member have multiple students applying for CLSA scholarships, the faculty member may choose to combine recommendations in the form of a matrix. Should the faculty member wish to submit recommendations in this format, a template will be provided by the Education Foundation. It is the student’s responsibility to verify that they are included in the matrix by requesting the faculty member provide them a form letter indicating they will be included in a matrix. Applications will not be considered without a letter of recommendation or form letter (available on the CLSA website).
  4. Submit a complete and official transcript through May of the year prior to when the award will be presented. Unofficial transcripts will be accepted provided that official transcripts are provided no more than 90 days after the application deadline. Applicants whose previous college/university experience resulted in a degree need not provide transcripts for that degree.
  5. Handwritten applications will not be accepted. Application must be completed through the website.

Incomplete, improperly completed, and late applications will not be accepted. Valid applications must be submitted no later than December 1.

Eligibility & Selection Criteria

Each scholarship has different criteria. To determine the criteria for a scholarship, visit the CLSA website at https://clsa.memberclicks.net/scholarships

Application Top Ten List

1) Include the names of the scholarships you have received in the past on your application.
2) Read the individual scholarship criteria. Keep the scholarship criteria in mind when filling out your application and writing your essay.
3) Always include your hometown county.  Many scholarship criteria include a specific geographical location requirement.
4) Confirm with your faculty advisor that he/she will write you a good recommendation before you apply.
5) More than one letter of recommendation can help your ranking.
6) Be specific and detailed with your explanation regarding professional involvement with student and professional organizations. Include your future plans (such as where you would like to work). Include any land surveying work experience.
7) Be honest and forthcoming in your essay. It can be difficult to talk about financial need, however, this is a consideration in the scholarship selections.
8) Neatness counts. It is required that the application and essay be typed. Handwritten applications and essays will NOT be accepted.  Pay attention to detail.  Spelling, grammar and content are important in your essay!
9) Be professional and courteous with your responses, think of this as a job resume.
10) Don’t wait until the last minute. Early applications can be amended. Late applications that are missing information will be rejected.

Lastly, a Thank You letter goes a long way. Many people spend countless volunteer hours on fundraising efforts to support these scholarships. Sometimes it's a golf tournament (lots of hours in preparation), sometimes it's a seminar or two and sometimes it's a portion of membership dues that fund your scholarship. Also, the silent and live auction activities at the CLSA conference are a large part of the Education Foundation efforts. A little information on what these scholarships mean to you will go a long way to inspire the many CLSA members that put in so many hours during the year to support these scholarships.
